Dubai (/duːˈbaɪ/doo-BYArabicدبيromanizedDubayy, IPA: [dʊˈbajj], Gulf Arabic pronunciation: [dəˈbaj]) is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, the most populated of the country’s seven emirates.[7][8][9]

Established in the 19th century as a small fishing village, Dubai grew into a regional trading hub in the early 20th century and grew rapidly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with a focus on tourism and luxury.[10] It has the second-most five-star hotels in the world[11] and boasts the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, which is 828 metres (2,717 ft) tall.

In the eastern Arabian Peninsula, on the coast of the Persian Gulf,[12] it is a major global transport hub for passengers and cargo.[13] Oil revenue helped accelerate the development of the city, which was already a major mercantile hub.

Dubai has been a center for regional and international trade since the early 20th century, and its economy relies on revenues from trade, tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services.[14][15][16][17] Oil production contributed less than 1 percent of the emirate’s GDP in 2018.[18] Due to financial secrecy, low taxes, and valuable real estate, Dubai is an appealing destination for money launderers, criminals, corrupt political figures and sanctioned businesspeople to launder or hide money.[19]

The city has a population of around 3.60 million (as of 2022).[20] More than 90% of the population are foreigners.[19]

Many theories have been proposed as to the origin of the word “Dubai”. One theory suggests the word used to be the souq in Ba.[21] An Arabic proverb says “Daba Dubai” (Arabic: دبا دبي), meaning “They came with a lot of money.”[22]

According to Fedel Handhal, a scholar on the UAE’s history and culture, the word Dubai may have come from the word dabba (Arabicدب) (a past tense derivative of yadub (Arabicيدب), which means “to creep”), referring to the slow flow of Dubai Creek inland.

The poet and scholar Ahmad Mohammad Obaid traces it to the same word, but to its alternative meaning of “baby locust” (Arabicجراد) due to the abundance of locusts in the area before settlement.[23]

The Burj Khalifa[a] (known as the Burj Dubai prior to its inauguration) is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the world’s tallest structure. With a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft, or just over half a mile) and a roof height (excluding antenna, but including a 242.6 m spire)[2] of 828 m (2,717 ft), the Burj Khalifa has been the tallest structure and building in the world since its topping out in 2009, surpassing Taipei 101, the previous holder of that status.[3][4]
